U.S. Border Patrol Team Wins 2007 5.11 Challenge
The finals for the 2007 5.11 Challenge were the closest in the competition's four-year history. After eight weeks of competitive shooting in Montana, the two-man U.S. Border Patrol team from Alamogordo, N.M., squeezed out first place with the last shot of the event.

On the eighth and final stage, Federal Agents Charlie Exum and Dale Young were about 70 points behind Officers Bryan Weathers and Jason Stearns of Edmond (Okla.) Police Department. The last two shots of the event were at two 5.11 Challenge coins placed 115 yards away with the .308 caliber Remington Light Tactical Rifle, Model 700. Each officer got a shot at the coin target, valued at 50 points each. Exum and Young both hit the coins while Stearns and Weathers missed by only one-quarter of an inch. The entire competition boiled down to those two shots after all eight stages.

Exum and Young received a total score of 4551 points. Weathers and Stearns were only 29 points behind with a score of 4540. The team from Homeland Security in Pascagoula, Mississippi—Brian Stout and Mike Sauls—were not far behind with a score of 4413.

All three two-man teams shot eight stages during the finals. Skills tested included using remote cameras to identify targets, shooting in low light, shotgun and rifle shooting, trap shooting, and shooting from different positions such as prone and kneeling.

For the last stage, the competitors shot the .308 Caliber Remington 700 LTR with a Leupold Mark 4 scope. The rifle was mounted on Lonestar's VRStm Spec-Rest. Each officer had three targets to shoot at from 115 yards. Two of the targets were four inches in diameter and one was the very small 5.11 Challenge Coin. As stated earlier, it was the last two shots by the last two competitors (Exum and Young) that decided the final outcome of the 2007 5.11 Challenge. They were the only officers to hit all of their targets.

As the grand champion team of the 5.11 Challenge, Agents Exum and Young will receive an equipment package from participating sponsors valued at $100,000. All 32 two-person teams involved in the competition walked away with apparel and gear from 5.11 Tactical.

Greetings Brother and Sister Warrior/Trainers!

Some quick housekeeping items first: Attached is a new membership or renewal form with A NEW ADDRESS!!!!! Please make note of the new address for anything that needs to be mailed to OALEFI. It's OALEFI, PO Box 33, Spencer, OK. 73084.
MAKE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR AGENCY'S FINANCE OFFICE IF YOU USE ANY PO'S FOR MEMBERSHIP OR FEES TO US.

Rob and I are both working the email box currently, and you will see messages from both of us. Look for the "Rob" or "JB" signature at the end to see who's talking at ya and who to respond to. Due to current account and system constraints, We have to send out three separate emails of each message to three separate email lists. Don't be offended if one time you receive an original, then another time a forward or fw:fw: It just depends on which list pops up first when I'm loading. Each email goes to about 160 address total.

Please understand that OALEFI@peoplepc.com, the originator of this message, is the official email of the association, and is currently manned by Rob and myself. Brother Tom Bradt runs the entirely separate OALEFI.com Web site for us, but the two are not ectronically linked in any way. The same is true for the Yahoo OALEFI message board which is hosted by Brother Johnny Turner. You ALL owe a debt of gratitude to Tom and Johnny for the time and effort they
volunteer in keeping their respective formats up and running. We have had some technical issues with the yahoo message board overwhelming the peoplepc. mailbox, but Johnny and I have finally straightened out the glitch (we hope).

Send emails about current OALEFI business to Rob or I here, not to the
discussion board or website. Check the web site for current info, photos, membership info, schools, for sale, etc; and discuss ideas with your brother and sister professional trainers on the message board. Cool!

Please note that OALEFI was planning to change our annual conference to May, but that has been changed back to September as of this time for logistics reasons. We hope to have exact dates as soon as conflicting match dates from several disciplines are posted. Stay tuned.

Last but not least, RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP! Annual memberships are due Jan 1st (yeah, last month!) This is the first opportunity I've had to get out renewal reminders, so consider yourself reminded. Please don't wait until you attend a conference, school , etc. to pay as it gums up the registration process and makes me or Rob or somebody have to take an extra night off work to sort through
the billing stuff. Waste 39 cents on a stamp to save a little work for our volunteers who keep this organization running for you. Nuff said, thanks.

Greetings everyone,
First of all I would like to apologize for this long overdue note. I have several updates and new developments to share.

First I met with Charlie Spencer and the CLEET bunch in reference to a MANDATORY qualification. We all know that this is long overdue and here is an explaination of wht was agreed to.
1.CLEET 20 round course AS -IS including the 50 Yd line
2. Mandatory for all officers in the state of OK
3.NO limit as to number of attempts any one officer can have.
4.CLEET Target ( changed later to or comparable)

We had all agreed on all of these stipulations until it was presented to the chief's association to which we can thank for the broad description of the target, as we all know if you change the target you change the standard.

Second, I need a volunteer to accompany me to Ada on the 21st of February to attend a "firearms program review" the meeting starts aat 9:00 am and I would like an additional Instructor with me prefferably with FIRST HAND knowledge of what is going on at CLEET. If you are interested in going please call me at 405-650-2778.

Third, Our Good friend Joe Evans has come up with the idea of having a class geared to fixing some of the issues with the new CLEET traained officers. He has secured the use of $300,000 worth of simulators and we will put on a 2 day class called beyond the basics, It will be similar to the last day of what CLEET used to be where the students will go from station to station and have a block of
instruction at each stop. We NEED some volunteers to help teach this class, Joe will be doing most of the classroom, but we need ideas for blocks of instruction and help teaching them. The goal is to have 2 of these classes per year, one in the metro area anad the other somewhere else. The first is scheduled for the 17th anad 18th of May hosted by Midwest City Police Department. The class size will be small, but it is a start. For all the instructors that help us with
these classes there will be a special drawing at the conference as an incentive to help. Please contact Joe James or I and we will steer you in the right direction.

Finally, as regards to last years training conference, I am in the process of trying to track down the class rosters and information from the conference. Please stay tuned we may need everyone to send me a list of who was there, It is ultimately my foult for not getting this information to CLEET personally. I assure you I will do everything I can to get our credit for the conference.

Jason Smith is looking at the possiblity of having challenge coins made for the association. I will pass along further as I get it.

Stay safe and keep up the good work

Stay Safe!

(Hey guys(gals). I recently posted an information request on the OALEFI website but received limited response. I'm re-posting that requst here on the newsletter in hopes of receiving a few more responses. My agency currently requires that any officer that wishes to carry a Taser, in addition to meeting Taser's guidelines, must submit to a, 1 time only, minimum 2 second exposure(take a ride/hit). As a Taser instructor I agree & support this "mandatory" exposure however, very recently some "complainers" have begun a campaign to change my Chiefs opinion on this issue. I have been tasked
w/obtaining a consensus of agencies across the state as to whether or not your agency requires officers to "take a ride" as a condition to carry & if so, the duration of that exposure. I would appreciate any responses to contain your name, your agency, yes or no & if yes, how long & forward to either of my emails. Below is a list of agencies that have already responded to this request.

Thanks,
Lt. Nate Norton Sapulpa P.D.
